Oral diseases account for an annual cost of 79 billion euros in the 27 countries of the European Union, second only to the impact of diabetes (137 billion euros) and cardiovascular diseases (105 billion euros). On World Oral Health Day, we emphasize the importance of maintaining good oral health, promoting healthy habits, and raising awareness of the risk factors that can cause problems in the mouth and teeth.
“Maintaining adequate oral health is fundamental, as it allows us to enjoy a quality of life in terms of nutrition and sleep, as well as contributing to overall good health. Additionally, good oral health helps prevent diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases, as the relationship between these pathologies and oral health has been demonstrated,” says Dr. Clara Esteban, Medical Director of DONTE GROUP.
In the context of this special day, we advocate for an inclusive expansion of dental care in Spain. With one-third of the Spanish population affected by caries, it is crucial to address the socio-economic inequalities in the prevalence and need for treatment of this disease (caries). Dr. Esteban highlights the need for policies that improve access, treatment continuity, and financing.
Prevention and early detection at all stages of life
It is important to remember that oral diseases, including caries, periodontitis or inflammation of the gums, halitosis or oral cancer, affect people of all ages and many of them are preventable and treatable.
Therefore, to maintain good oral health and reduce the risk of oral diseases, we recommend visiting the dentist regularly, brushing teeth twice a day, changing the toothbrush every 3 months, and having regular dental cleanings. It is also crucial to avoid risk factors such as poor nutrition (especially high intake of carbohydrates and sugars), tobacco and alcohol consumption, and maintain proper oral hygiene habits.
World Oral Health Day is an initiative promoted by the FDI World Dental Federation with the aim of improving oral health worldwide, emphasizing the importance of education and awareness for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral diseases. The theme of the campaign for the period 2024-2026 is “A happy mouth is a happy body,” emphasizing the importance of caring for our oral health to feel good overall. At DONTE GROUP, we are committed to continuing to promote oral health and well-being for our patients and the community at large.
